How to Dive Into a Pool: 12 Steps (with Pictures) - wikiHow
4. Crouch close to the pool and glide into the water. Stand with your toes slightly over the edge of the pool, and crouch down close. Put your arms in position over your head - remember to tuck in that chin! - and point your hands toward the water. Now rock your body forward and gently glide into the water headfirst. wikiHow is a “wiki,” similar to Wikipedia, which means that many of our articles are co-written by multiple authors. Learning to dive can be a little nerve-wracking at first, but good technique can help you can make the process easier.
To dive into a pool, start by placing your lead foot over the rim of the pool and raising your arms straight above your head. Then, push off with your lead foot and dive head first into the pool so your hands enter the water first. To do a jackknife dive, start by taking a few steps forward on a diving board and then lunging and jumping so you land right on the end. Then, jump off the diving board and reach your arms down to your toes so you look like an upside-down V. Finally, straighten out your body and dive into the water. 10 Must-Dive Destinations For 2020 - Forbes
Roca Partida, Revillagigedo, Mexico. Getty. This year, my annual must-dive destinations around the world list is changing up a bit. Because in 2020 I’m moving past picture-perfect travel moments Because in 2020 I’m moving past picture-perfect travel moments and instead, I’m looking for those real, authentic experiences that take you beyond Instagram. I’m moving beyond the idyllic blue waters that typically come to mind for an annual roundup of this type (although, there are still some, of course) in exchange for diving experiences of a different kind. And that means heading to places where you didn’t know diving was possible. My goal this year is to challenge your diving conceptions, and comfort level. I, for one, never expected to be dreaming about diving in landlocked countries like Mongolia and Macedonia, but here I am, concocting plans to get to places like Lake Khovsgol and Lake Ohrid as quickly as I can this year (it helps that I’ll be spending half my year exploring Mongolia).
So, without further delay, here are the top 10 diving destinations to seek out in 2020, including tips from other writers, bloggers and trusted travelers who have experienced some of these incredible underwater destinations for themselves. Happy exploring.
Channel your inner Indiana Jones with a dive in one of the oldest and deepest lakes in Europe, Lake Ohrid, which stretches into Albania. You’ll not only spot shoals of fish but artifacts such as ceramics, stone tools, and animal bones thanks to the Bronze and Iron Age town that calls the shores of this lake home.
Since the underwater archeological sites of Lake Ohrid were only discovered roughly twenty years ago, there’s still an air of mystery and undiscovered allure to the place. With amazing visibility and no shortage of colorful animals, you never know what you’ll discover here. At Bay of Bones, be prepared to dive under a rebuilt city as you swim between pillars and discover artifacts. At Plocha Michov Grad, you’ll witness an ongoing underwater excavation site in progress that’ll have your inner archeologist itching for more.
As the most famous conservation area in Zanzibar, Mnemba Atoll is home to snappers, sergeant fish, Moorish idols, Napoleon wrasse, groupers, trevallies, dolphins, and white tip reef sharks, to name (more than) a few. There’s a reason Zanzibar is often called the tropical fish capital of East Africa.
Travel writer and videographer Erik Trinidad says that out of all the dive spots he’s been around the globe, the Mnemba Atoll stands out as one of the best. But who can blame him? “The warm indigo and turquoise waters with 100-foot visibility make the intense colors of the coral fields more spectacular,” he says.
And while foreigners have always enjoyed diving here, the local female population is finding their place in the water as well thanks to Panje Project, a local initiative that not only provides lessons and drowning prevention techniques to local women, but burkinis as well, which have been hard for the local women to find (the country’s population is 98% Muslim), until now. Your shared love of the water just might be your chance to connect with locals here.
With budget-friendly tank rental and dive trip rates for every different type of certification, as well as liveaboard packages that might sound too good to believe, there’s a reason why Vietnam is a hotspot for both novice and experienced divers – not to mention it’s the spot where the legendary Jacques Cousteau discovered his passion for the ocean.
Whale Island specifically, with an average water temperature that hovers around a beautiful 82° Fahrenheit (28° Celsius), is particularly known for its macro gems hidden among the lush soft corals, which makes drift diving here that much more exciting. It’s also a favorite hangout for manta, eagle and stingrays. And, no surprise here, whales and whale sharks flock to the archipelago to feed on masses of krill and plankton between April and July, giving the place its name.
So, you’ve been diving all over the world. What’s next? Maybe this is your year to try a liveaboard experience where it’s all diving, all the time. That’s where the Aggressor Cayman V Liveaboard comes in.
Not only is the Aggressor Cayman V the top of the top in terms of liveaboard experiences, but the diving here – you board in Georgetown, then head around Grand Cayman, Little Cayman, and Cayman Brac – is top notch as well. From night dives where spotting 22 lobsters and four octopi isn’t out of the ordinary to exploring swim throughs and the impressive walls in Little Cayman, which some might argue is the best wall diving in the Caribbean, this is the best way to be introduced to the whole liveaboard life. I have no doubt you’ll become addicted.
At an altitude of 5,300 feet, Lake Khovsgol is a sacred place (just ask any Mongolian). It’s Mongolia’s largest and deepest lake, the second largest lake in Central Asia, and the source of almost 2% of the world’s fresh water. With a short dive season that starts in June and runs through September, August is really the best time to plan a trip here (unless, of course, you’re into ice diving, which is technically possible during small periods of the winter). Despite August’s near-ideal conditions, though, a dry suit is going to be your best option.
While the challenges of diving here are plenty, the reward for your efforts will be worth every pain. From old Soviet boat wrecks to abandoned cars that broke through the ice (locals drive over the lake in winter), to a fish population that includes only nine known species, it isn’t about what you discover in the lake that puts Lake Khovsgol on this year’s list, but about what the lake helps you discover about yourself that does.
There are plenty of reasons to dream about the Maldives. The overwater bungalows, for one. The tropical climate, for two. But something that’s even better than both of those things? You guessed it – the diving.
With the collection of thila (underwater mountains) and a strong underwater current, this is one of the most diverse places to dive in South Asia. Plus, you never know which underwater species – from a varied makeup of gorgonians, whip corals, black corals and more – will decide to join you on your adventure.
“Kudarah Thila is one of the first protected dive sites in the Maldives,” says Maren Engh from the dreamy Voyager Guru blog and Instagram. “Located in South Ari Atoll, this dive site is one of the most famous due to its currents, causing the perfect combination of coral and fish life to exist. Divers will frequently see seemingly endless reef sharks, barracuda, tuna and tremendous fans. We saw more fish on this dive than all of our 35+ dives alone!” If that isn’t tempting enough of a reason to get there for a diving adventure, the area’s 25 other atolls will be.
Saba Island probably isn’t a place you’ve ever heard of. Only sizing in at a mere five-square-miles, this tiny island is perhaps one of the Caribbean’s best kept secrets. “Nestled among a string of Caribbean Islands, Saba is not only home to one of the shortest runways in the world but also boasts of the most incredible places to dive in the world too,” says Kristen Kellogg of Border Free Travels. “Underwater pinnacles are a big draw for diving here, basically like an upside-down mountain under the water created from previous volcanic activity. Dive among tropical fish and healthy coral in the Marine Park. And if you’re into hiking, the island is also great for that too!”
And with nudibranchs, conch, brown and blue chromis, garden eels peeking up from the sand, hawksbill and green turtles, barracuda and spotted eagle rays all gracing these waters, Saba might not have been on your radar until now, but that undoubtedly won’t stop you from dreaming about an underwater adventure in this secret paradise this year.
Many divers in-the-know are already dreaming about diving the Silfra Fissure for 2020, the beautiful but frigid dive between two tectonic plates that tops many bucket lists year after year. But most people don’t realize Iceland is full of other great diving opportunities. If you can get over the year-round need for a dry suit and often less than desirable temperatures, you’ll be thoroughly rewarded.
Iceland’s first underwater natural reserve is home to the only geothermal chimneys accessible to divers in the world (most geothermal chimneys are located thousands of feet below the surface). The chimney at Strýtan, being only 45 feet below the surface, makes it the shallowest geothermal chimney on the planet – and one that’s just waiting for divers to come and explore.
Releasing more than 26 gallons of 160° Fahrenheit water every second, diving here is for Advanced Open Water divers only, due to buoyancy being key in order to avoid damaging the 11,000-year-old ice age wonder.

Sitting 340 miles off the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, the entirety of Cocos Island is a Costa Rican National Park, void of any residents except the rangers who keep the land protected, which means – hello, liveaboard experience number two. With deep waters and countercurrents, it’s the populations of hammerhead sharks, rays, dolphins and other large marine species that attract the most adventurous of divers.
Cocos Island is one of the most diverse places to dive in the world, with more than 30 species of coral, 60 species of crustaceans, 600 species of mollusks, and more than 300 species of fish, including large populations of yellowfin tuna, giant mantas, sailfish and sharks – from whitetip reef to scalloped hammerheads. It’s also a spot where it’s not uncommon for whale sharks, humpback whales, orcas, pilot whales, bottlenose dolphins and sea lions to be in the water with you. Expect to see something good!
Hopkins, the tiny 1,000-person Garifuna village lying on the coast between Belize City and Punta Gorda, isn’t just known for its friendly population. This is also where you can access some of the best diving in the country.
Amanda Ho, co-founder of Regenerative Travel says, “from Hamanasi Resort you can access top dive sites in the Southern Barrier Reef (the second largest in the world) – from the famous Great Blue Hole to the Turneffe Atoll. Dive into crystal clear waters filled with marine life and immerse yourself in the ocean wonder of Belize, home to one of the world’s most vibrant coral reefs.”
With plenty to explore in and out of the water, plus the perks of being in an English-speaking population, this often-overlooked Central American country is a place that’s easy to explore and enjoy for a more relaxed diving experience.
Splitting my time between Ulaanbaatar and Tbilisi, I cover the best of remote and adventure travel in lesser known destinations around the world.
